Latest News: Mostly The Moment Theatre Company launches inaugural season!

Thursday, October 27, 2011

(Fredericton, NB) The Garrison District Ale House provided the setting today for the launch of a new amateur theatre company in Fredericton. Mostly The Moment is the brainchild of local lawyer Kelly Lamrock, whose love of theatre cultivated a desire in him to create an outlet for local amateur theatre artists in the city. An enthusiastic crowd gathered to support Lamrock, his board of directors, cast members, and other supporters as they launched an exciting and somewhat controversial season of entertainment.

Lamrock noted the flourishing cultural landscape in our capital city, stating that "Fredericton isn't just New Brunswick's political capital. In many ways, it's the creative capital as well. Our company is hoping to do its part to add a few more fun nights out for our community." Continues Lamrock, “Launching our season is the result of searching for two things: the very best amateur acting talent in Fredericton, and the most compelling stories for them to tell. We feel good about this season on both counts."

Mostly The Moment will produce three shows this season, beginning in February with Becky Shaw–a dark comedy by Law & Order writer Gina Gionfriddo. Dubbed by The New York Times as “ferociously funny,” this is a play that asks what we owe the people we love and the strangers who land on our doorstep.

Following Gionfriddo’s critically acclaimed work will be Neil LaBute’s Tony Award nominated play reasons to be pretty, which explores North America’s obsession with physical beauty. In this play, four friends are forced to confront a sea of deceit, infidelity and betrayed trust in their journey to answer that age-old question: How much is pretty worth?

The season will close with what promises to be a memorable yet controversial experience: Avenue Q by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, with book by Jeff Whitty. Avenue Q's unique presentation requires substantially more suspension of disbelief by audience members than normal. The cast consists of three human characters and eleven puppet characters who interact as if human, Sesame Street-style.

But don’t let their G-rated exterior fool you – this is a show for adults. And this Tony Award-winning production is sure to please because, above all else, it will keep you in stitches. Lamrock notes that the entire season will intrigue patrons and hopefully leave them wanting more. “These are fun shows,” he says. “If you're not a regular theatre-goer, these shows might just convince you. And if you know you love the theatre, these shows will thrill you."

Becky Shaw will preview on February 14 at Centre Communautaire Ste Anne, and run February 17-19. The same venue will host reasons to be pretty, running March 30-April 1, and Avenue Q will go up at The Fredericton Playhouse from June 7-9.

Season passes are only $45 (taxes incl.); you’ll enjoy three nights of award-winning theatre at 25% off the individual ticket price. Both season passes and individual tickets are available for all three shows at The Fredericton Playhouse box office by calling 458-8344, visiting in person, or online at www.theplayhouse.ca.
